"We love and need the mountains, trails and wild
places. They nourish our spirit."
This same spirit is evident in all the work the Gateway Disabled Ski Program
does to bring disabled children and adults to the mountains.
We are proud to partner with Gateway Disabled Ski Program
and hope to work with them to help many more experience the same nourishment of spirit we find on the slopes.

Founded in 1911 and organized for the purpose of carrying
on programs in support of the prevention of blindness and for educational, benevolent, and charitable activities for, and
on behalf of blind individuals, the Society currently serves more than 1,500 individuals annually. Over the years the programs
and services have evolved to primarily serve older adults who are newly blind or visually impaired through community, home
based, and agency services. Most recently the Society has expanded into providing services to school-age students in local
school districts in Illinois and Missouri.
The Society is the only agency of its kind serving the Saint Louis area,
and the second oldest of its kind west of the Mississippi River.

Mary E. Ryder, a prominent St. Louisian, founded the
Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc., also known as LHB Industries, in 1933. Through her compassion and imagination, she identified
the need for a place whereby the blind and legally blind could count on developing new, productive skills while simultaneously
earning a steady income.
For over 70 years, we have been guided by this vision and dedicated to our mission of helping
blind and legally blind people increase their employment opportunities, independence and integration into society.
As
of 2005, we hold 24 contracts with Government agencies covering over 200 products. We currently operate two facilities. Our
Berkeley facility primarily packages aerosol and liquid cleaning products as well as aerosol and liquid paints. Our Trenton
facility assembles quality first aid kits, medical kits and catheters. We have extensive lab facilities and an experienced
technical staff that develops, formulates and produces new products.
In January of 2005, we launched our first Continuing
Education Program. This program provides educational assistance to blind and legally blind children that are residents of
the St. Louis Metropolitan area, in the form of adaptive equipment, college tuition or training. Currently we employ a
total of 105 people. There are 39 Legally Blind employees and 17 totally Blind employees.
