Opening Day for GDSP Athletes

The skiing experience is available to persons with a wide variety of disabilities through GDSP. There is no charge for skiing with GDSP but each athlete must purchase a season pass from Hidden Valley. You can purchase your pass at Hidden Valley during the training sessions or print your registration out and mail it directly to Hidden Valley. Season Passes for athletes with their own equipment is $50.00. Season passes with Rental Skis and Boots are $75.00. Some participating organizations contribute to the cost of the season pass for athletes. Transportation to the program is also provided by some participating organizations.

Physically disabled skiers who ski on Monday nights includes persons with spinal cord injuries, cerebral palsy, and amputees. A variety of special equipment is provided by GDSP. Volunteers teach and assist athletes as needed. Even athletes with little coordination can experience skiing with the Bi-ski, Mono-ski, Adaptive Snow Slider or Adaptive Snow Board. Experienced volunteers tether the equipment and help the athlete learn turning skills and speed control. Ski passes for Monday night skiers using adaptive equipment is $75.00.

Visually impaired skiers, athletes from the Missouri School for the Blind and Special Olympics athletes ski on Thursday. Volunteers teach and guide athletes.

Each year, GDSP sponsors and provides volunteer coaches for Special Olympics skiers who compete at the Heartland Special Olympics Games at Snow Creek near Kansas City. In 2008, the games will be held on January 24 and 25. GDSP does not control registration for this event. Athletes must register through Maureen Williams at blackjacktravel@sbcglobal.net.
